Brush High School Boys Basketball Team Look Toward Tournaments with Coach Mason

Brush Arcs

Chet Mason was a standout basketball player at the now closed South High School. He spent four years at Miami University in the quiet town of Oxford. As a four-year starter, he amassed statistics comparable to another great Miamian, former Cavalier, Ron Harper. Miami is known as the “Cradle of Coaches” due to the number of famous coaches who have honed their craft there. Mason was hired as head coach for Brush Hush School in 2015.

Coach Mason has his Arcs primed for a long tournament run this year. Fresh off a win over St Ignatius, this Brush basketball team is streaming along in a magical year. Currently ranked ninth in the AP Ohio High School poll, Brush has a trio of NCAA Division 1 recruits. These players are peaking at the right time. Antwone Woolfork, Marlon Barnes, Elmore James are leaders on one of the best teams Brush history. Elmore is also a finalist for the Clark Kellogg Player of the Year award. Elmore and is his teammate Barnes are considered as Ohio players to watch for Mr. Ohio Basketball.

Currently, Brush’s boys’ team has a 18-3 record. Their only losses this year were to Akron St Vincent St Mary, St Edward and Lincoln (Gahanna). In last year’s tournament, Brush lost to Massillon Jackson. With these losses, there is hope that this experience will serve the Arcs well.

As a tune up to the tournament, Brush got a little revenge with a win over Jackson, 75-67, last Tuesday. The win included contributions from point guard, Trace Bishko, with six three pointers. Another scorer for Chet’s team? That’s truly scary! Friday, Brush closed out the regular season with a victory over Youngstown East, 84-46.

Looking at the state tournament bracket for Brush, they can avenge a loss to Mentor from 2020 in the district final. Therefore, if the tournament plays out the way Brush wants, they will face St Edward in the regional semifinal. That would be an opportunity to send home a foe which defeated them earlier this season.

As a player at Miami, Chet “the Jet” Mason never had a chance to play in the NCAA basketball tournament. However, with the program he has built with his Arc players, Coach Mason is ready for a tournament run with Brush. In addition, being able to avenge the losses along the way, would be a satisfying end to a championship season.
