Munch Musings: “All good in the ‘hood but not with the PGA”

“All good in my ‘hood but not with the PGA”!

Where do I begin? I will come out and say similar to NASCAR I do not go out of my way to watch the PGA tour on TV! OK, I will watch the last few holes of the Masters, British Open, Memorial and when we had the event at Firestone plus, I totally enjoyed covering the Memorial LIVE for years “inside the ropes” while I have not watched 2 minutes of NASCAR on TV my entire life. I will say I totally respect the athletic skills and acumen the participants have in their respective endeavors, but it is not for me. I golf infrequently, almost always for a charity event ( The Jimmy Malone Scholarship Outing and a few other worthwhile causes) but rarely for pleasure as it is not usually pleasing to me! Yeah, I blow but improve as the round goes on.

With the above said I must weigh in on the cowardly action of the PGA tour to join forces with LIV and no doubt I salute Tiger and Rory for originally turning down 700 million and 300 million respectively from LIV to protect the PGA Tour. In the same vein I must say how disgusted I am with Greg Norman and even a man I always admired Jack Nicklaus for “cow towing” and grabbing their ankles for the Sheiks. They should have said “Sheik your booty out of here!” Now the PGA Tour joins these men and others in a corruption scandal and favoring the Saudi regime “over American values and basic human dignities.” Thank you, Steve Schmidt, for the verbiage in quotation marks above!

What is up with that you say? My retort is simple and precise…First and foremost even if you did desire that Donald Trump reside in the White House, golf fans he now will be involved in pro golf. He has 2 billion reasons to cast his lot with the ruling party in this case plus LIV loves his courses. Also, what has happened is “not so bad” if you don’t mind the people who attacked us on 9/11, sawed up a NY Times reporter who disagreed with them, treat their women like dirt and their Crown Prince is using sports to wash his hands of his tarnished reputation as the powers to be behind LIV.

No doubt PGA players were betrayed and in the real world so were golf fans. Interesting to note that in a conversation I had with a media member who covers golf in Phoenix, I asked him “do you see fans boycotting going to events or even not watching on TV to lessen the ratings.” His response will floor you! He said, “Probably some will but odds are this change will be embraced in Cleveland as the fans there have welcomed a man who preyed on and abused dozens of women plus most of the media idolizes him.” OUCH, that hurts and stings even more as sadly it is true.

It is a sad day for the world of professional golf. Let’s head to Sweeties Golf Land in Brookpark and putt our way to sanity.

As always enjoy every sandwich and “Adios Amigo, long may you run.”
