Munch Musings All better than good in the old neighborhood – Guardians Edition

PLAY BALL! After hearing “love you” from the wife, those are my next two favorite words and yes friend the time has come for the BOYS OF SUMMER to take to the diamond. No doubt in the words of the sensational Sarah Langs from MLB.com “BASEBALL IS THE BEST”!

Most of you know my inner-city roots and even though I am a proud graduate of Solon High School I “cut my teeth” in Slavic Village and the Lee-Harvard neighborhoods of Cleveland. In fact, it was in our home at 3990 JoAnn Drive where the sport really took hold of me. The Summer between 1st and 2nd grade was where my love for baseball really took hold. Before he went to the Plant in the morning my Dad, Max, would have a bowl of cereal, pack his lunch pail with a couple of Lawson’s bologna sandwiches, fill his thermos with coffee, and make sure the Plain Dealer Sports page was open to the box scores.

Before I headed to the back yard to loosen up with my PITCH BACK (Remember those? Basically, a net attached to a frame with springs!) I would have my bowl of cereal, usually something I did not need like frosted flakes and indeed, the milk was delivered in glass bottles by who else, the milkman, AND I would devour not only the cereal but the box scores. From the Little Kitten Camilio Pascual tossing a gem to another double play turned by Aparicio and Fox to ANYTHING AT ALL RELATED TO MY TRIBE those stats and numbers were in my gray matter!

Of course, our hometown heroes the Guardians start the 2026 campaign tonight in Seattle and I need to know who made this schedule? 4 against the M’s down to LA for 3 with the Dodgers then home against the Cubs plus a gauntlet in the whole month of April of very good teams! Hey, what did Reggae Master Jimmy Cliff sing? “The harder they come the harder they fall one and all!” I’ll finish with my words of wisdom to the haters and rabble who are jealous of this team…Cleveland is the 4th winningest team in the bigs in the last 10 years along with the Dodgers, astros and Yankees! Yup all they do is win!!
