Cleveland Guardians’ skipper Stephen Vogt announced Thursday that he’s planning to give Steven Kwan reps in center field. The gold glove left fielder played center field in college and the minors but only 31 innings in the majors.
However, Kwan is open to the move having this to say “Those angles are just so much better (in center) in left field you get the hook-line-drives from the righties, the flare balls from the lefties down the line…those are just so unfun. You have to be so precise with those reads. In center field at least you have a better idea, you can see where the catcher is setting up. I actually just thought of this right now…I’ll get a PitchCom out there in center which is awesome… so you’ll have more information when you make those reads.”
Why Kwan in center field makes sense
Moving Kwan to center field is a great idea by the Guardians for several reasons. Kwan is known for his exceptional defensive skills, quick reaction time, and impressive range, all of which are crucial attributes for a center fielder. His ability to cover ground efficiently helps bolster the team’s outfield defense and can save runs over the course of the season.
Additionally, Kwan’s strong baseball IQ and consistent performance at the plate provide stability in the lineup, allowing the Guardians to maximize his impact both offensively and defensively. By placing him in center field, the team can take advantage of his versatility and leadership, making the overall roster more dynamic and competitive. Center field is the most crucial position in the outfield and who better than the Guardians’ king of “web gems” to be the captain of the outfield.
Vogt talked with the media on Friday regarding which players we can see at left field.

It’s just the beginning of spring training, however, this move by the Guardians shows they’re willing to shake things up a bit. This move has high potential to prove beneficial especially considering the rookies that are available to play the outfield.
