HS Boys Hoops: Pfeil’s Buzzer-Beater Lifts Vermilion to 63-61 Win Over Clyde Fliers

It came down to the last second for the Vermilion Sailors on Wednesday night, but Jonah Pfeil’s buzzer-beater was the difference as Vermilion topped Clyde 63-61.

The win for the Sailors puts them at 13-2 on the year.

Pfeil scored the game-winner after he caught the ball on the right wing with five second left, and took it strong to the basket and finished the contested layup as time expired.

The Sailors heated up early as they took a 12-5 lead in the opening minutes of the contest, but the Fliers would answer right back scoring 7 straight of their own to tie things back up.

The Fliers would then hold off the Sailors throughout the remaining of the quarter to have a two point lead heading into the second.

The Fliers would open up the second quarter scoring 6 straight to push their lead to 27-19 and force a Sailors timeout. The Sailors would cut the lead to as close a four but the Fliers held a 33-25, before the Sailors closed out the half a on 9-2 run, to trail 35-34.

The Fliers came out strong once again to start the second half, connecting on back to back triples, but the Sailors would respond with one of their own to end the Fliers run.

The remained of the third quarter saw the Fliers push their lead to as many as 6, which would be the biggest lead either team had in the second half outside of the opening minute of play.

The Sailors would erase that 6 point Fliers lead with a three of their own in the waning seconds of the third and trailed by three heading into the fourth.

The fourth quarter showdown was worth getting yourself a bag of popcorn, because neither team would budge. The Sailors would find the basket, and then the Fliers would answer right back.

It was clear that this game would come down to the final possession. After each team called timeouts with 13 seconds, the Sailors had the possession.

Following the inbounds play the Sailors worked it around and hit Pfeil on the right wing and he drove to the basket to help lift the Sailors over the Fliers 63-61.

Mason Montgomery finished with a game high 20 points on 7-12 shooting, and fell one rebound shy of a double-double. Pfeil finished the night with 13 points, with 5 rebounds and 6 assists.

Seth Hurd had 13 points for the Sailors and 5 rebounds. Reese Miller chipped in 10 points, and had a game high 4 steals. Zach Kovach added 4 and Sterling Benko hit a three.

Vermilion will look to remain perfect in the SBC on Friday when they play host to the Oak Harbor Rockets.
