Cleveland Hts wins 34-26 over the Bedford Bearcats

This game recap is brought to you by “The Book Shelf LLC” in which the Cleveland Heights Tigers(4-2) traveled to take on the undefeated Bedford Bearcats(6-0) for Bedford’s annual homecoming game.  Last week the Tigers played a strong second half of football in which they came from behind to defeat Maple Heights 34-30. The Bedford Bearcats had a scare late in last week’s game against Garfield Heights by giving up three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but the Bearcats lead was strong enough for winning the game 40-33.

The first drive of the game Cleveland Heights scores on a 4th down play which was a 22 yard pass from senior quarterback Cam Searight to senior wide receiver Sir Summers for the first points of the game. Searight also  contributed to the successful drive by completing a few short passes and also a few rushing yards. Sophomore dscn0649Xavier Pillar had a rush for 16 yards on the drive as well.

But it wasn’t too long before Cleveland Heights got the ball back on offense because Bedford’s Arshaun Boone threw an interception on his first play of the day. Shortly after Cleveland Heights senior running back ran got away from Bedford defenders for an 18 yard run setting up senior Reggie Harris for a 21 yard score bringing the score to 14-0.

But to open the 2nd quarter Bedford put together a successful drive and confided in Sophomore running back Aaron Stone to get them on the board with 2 yard rushing touchdown and Bedford was not successful with extra point conversion.

Things seemed to be turning in the favor of Bedford because that next drive Cleveland Heights quarterback Searight fumbled on a option play trying to pitch it to running back Xavier Pillar and the Bearcats recovered the football. Unfortunately for the Bearcats, Cleveland Heights defense wasn’t quite ready for them to score again forcing a punt.

dscn0452The Tigers definitely were playing with a sense of urgency because that next drive Cam Searight found Sir Summers on the sideline for a 30 yard touchdown leaving 3:58 left on the clock in the second quarter. But that did not stop Bedford from scoring again before halftime because Head coach Sean Williams put a drive together which allowed Lemuel McMichael to score a 12 yard rushing touchdown bringing the score 21-12 missing another 2-pt conversion.

Cleveland Heights started the third quarter off with a squib kick and recovering the ball, but they could not find a way to move the ball because the Bearcat defense forced two plays for losses during the drive and forcing the punt and the worse thing possible happened and Bedford’s punt returner Rahmon Davis-Smith took the return 85 yards for a touchdown and Bedford was of no success on the 2-point conversion, bringing the score now to 21-18.dscn0665

The next drive Cleveland Heights quarterback Cam Searight threw his only interception for the day, but his defense returned the favor because defensive lineman Jarid Shears caught his first interception for the season off of a screen play from Bedford. This interception led into a 6 yard rushing touchdown from Reggie Harris for his second touchdown of the night bringing the lead to 27-18 missing the extra-point conversion.

Bedforddscn0818 seemed to be putting together another successful drive until wide receiver Davion Johnson fumbled the ball on a double reverse that Cleveland Heights jumped on immediately, allowing Cam Searight to come in and find receiver Jaylen Harris for a 24 yard gain. Thereafter, Xavier Pillar rushed for a 8 yard touchdown with the addition of a successful 1-point conversion bringing there lead over Bedford in the fourth quarter now to 34-18.

Things just wasn’t going to well for Bedford’s Arshaun Boone because he came right out and threw his second interception with 8:41 left on the clock. But the defense forced Cleveland Heights to  punt the ball and get Boone back on the field. With the next possession Boone found wide receiver Trenton Cloud for a 56 yard touchdown running a double-reverse toss play, I guess it’s safe to say the trick plays were brought out today.

With all the tricks in the book it wasn’t enough to come back and win the game, Bedford streak ends at “6” and now they hold the record of 6-1 and quarterback Arshaun Boone suffered an injury on Bedford’s last drive of the game. Next week for Bedford they will be taking on (3-4)Shaw Cardinals. As for Cleveland Heights(5-2) they will be traveling to Akron next week to take on (4-3)St.Vincent-St. Mary  who are coming off a overtime win tonight against Winton Woods of Cincinnati.
