All better than good in one of my old Neighborhoods! This commentary is being written over 2 1/2 hours before the Guards first pitch on Wednesday, September 24.
The above lead in can only relate to one happening right now on the North Coast of America…THE Cleveland Guardians and indeed they are better than good right now and actually for the last few weeks. Are we living the movie MAJOR LEAGUE? We have not beaten the New York Yankees yet in the ALCS but let’s take it one game at a time!
Something that also needs to be stressed, as there are still a few cultist haters (yes, the orange and brown rabble) and it drives them crazy that the Guards are winning however it should not be a surprise as all this team does is WIN.! YEAR AFTER YEAR THEY WIN! Stop the tired narrative of being cheap. Talk to MLB about the disparity in payroll. Would you like a multimillion dollar a year power bat? OF COURSE! Wait a second, didn’t this team try that with Bell and Zunino? It was a disaster and yet they continued to win! the team is 13 games over .500! They have 85 wins with 5 games to go. What were the so-called experts saying? 74 wins tops?!
Something else I must get out here is the owners of the team ARE #TheLAND! They epitomize what it means to be CLEVELAND! They care about the city. They are not immoral thieves who are trying to tear down the core of the city. THESE ARE GOOD PEOPLE. I’ll stop here as I need to stress the positives with this team!
Look at the game last (Tuesday, 9/23) night. Williams, the BIG RIG vs reigning Cy Young winner Skubal. Hmmmm…some were nervous. Were the Guards nervous last year in the postseason or last week against this very fine lefthander? HECK NO!! My emotions were everywhere before, during and after this game. I got teary eyed watching the crowd flock in, seeing a man who screams CLEVELAND in DrewTyler Carey, taking the first pitch out to the mound plus recognizing Donovan Mitchell in the crowd. I dropped to a knee and cried when David Fry went down and t cap things off I shed major tears when HAMMY said “BALL GAME!”
Look at both lineups. There is no doubt the Tigers out a formidable line up at any opponent. The Guards really do not care, especially the pitching! In the third the Motor City Kitties got back-to-back doubles to start the inning and plated one run. In the 6th they got a solo shot from All Star Riley Greene, who the Cleveland pitchers have kept in check. Williams was throwing bb’s – 12 K’s and only 2 walks in 6 IP plus the biggest reason he rocked…a 1-2-3 first inning with a K and a backwards K! NO WALKS, NO HRs!
Look at the bottom of the 6th. TIME TO GO TO WORK, HANDLE YOUR BIDNESS AND PLAY #GuardsBall! Kwan leads off with a bunt single to the catcher! Martines a SAC bunt to get Kwanie to 2nd and lo and behold Tarik tries to hike to ball to the 1B and he did just that…out into RF! Now runners on 2nd and 3rd and JOSE JOSE JOSE hits an infield single. ONE RUN IN. Skubal, truly imploded, as David Fry came to the plate. YES THE GUARDS GOT TO HIM BIG TIME, threw a wild pitch and Angel scored. David had a 1-2 count when he squared to bunt and Skubal came in high and inside, as if to say, “No more bunts against me.” Sadly, we know what happened. The ball grazed David’s bat ever so slightly and he took the brunt of a 99 MPH fast ball in the face. PLEASE KEEP THE PRAYERS COMING. David is in the Cleveland Clinic, main campus, and there is no need for surgery. He has facial and nasal fractures. YES HE WILL BE WATCHED CLOSELY BY DOCS. Skubal, who was very emotional when Fry went down then balked JOSE to third and he scored on an Arias ground out. The ball did not leave the infield, and the Guards scored 3! Up 3-2 after 6!
Sabrowski came in and fanned 2 and got a line out that KWAN speared and it was 3-2 in the middle of 7th! I loved the emotion he showed coming off the hill! Now in the bottom of the 7th Skubal was done and here we go against the Detroit pen! The first two hitters fanned but Hedgie walked, Kwan doubled then Schneeman drove them both home. After 7 5-2 Good Guys. Gaddis finished the 8th (2 K’s, a single and another K) then Cade finished off the boys with the Old English Ds on their caps.
One other thing to note…Hinch the Tigers skipper should NOT be in the bigs. He supported his players cheating to win the World Series. How satisfying is it to see Vogt out managing him. NOW THERE IS NORE WORK TO DO. No doubt with JOSE RAMIREZ as the conductor of this orchestra, they are capable of getting it done. It will not be easy. It is so refreshing to not hear any GUARDIANS players talk about how great they are., that they are going to the World Series and that the opponents are “this and that.” Yup we know what rolls downhill…just look at the football team in town.

Because we made lousy decisions with Bell and Zunino doesn’t mean going out and getting a proven MLB bat is the wrong thing to do.
Make better decisions! The cheating Astros has a player from us we shouldn’t have given up on (Diaz).
I don’t think Dolan’s 25th payroll position out of 30 MLB teams is sacrosanct – we had a significant attendance increase in 2024 and our payroll went DOWN in 2025.
In 2016 we were ranked 18th in payroll.
Clearly, I do NOT believe we should be trying to compete with the top 15 spenders.
But inching our payroll up towards a ranking of 21 or 22 makes me a hater type fan calling Dolan cheap?
KC and Cincinnati and Milwaukee all outspend us. Are those small market teams wrong to do so?
Would another proven MLB bat help our playoff chances?
I think so as a longtime diehard Tribe fan.
