Is a stronger bullpen the key to the Guardians’ 2025 postseason push?

Progressive Field - Cleveland Guardians

For the Cleveland Guardians, the bullpen has become more than a late-inning insurance policy. It is becoming more and more pivotal to whether the club can turn regular-season promise into October success. Will just “having a better bullpen” really be enough to take Cleveland into the playoffs and through? In short answer, yes, however, it isn’t the one and only ticket. Here’s why.

The Bullpen’s current standing and why it matters

Relief pitching is very important in baseball. A single run often determines a game, while one bad inning can change a series.

The Guardians’ relievers have basically been one of baseball’s better bullpens by most standard measures going into the 2025 season, with a top bullpen ERA and a solid WHIP relative to the average team.  A group like that gives a manager options late in games, protects leads, and shortens high-stress innings for starters who have trouble late in outings.

Elite bullpens often lead teams to outperform expectations in short series. When late-inning matchups become ineffective, teams can utilize one or two reliable relievers to convert small leads into victories. For Cleveland, a strong pen has been key when starters falter, as seasonal power rankings have pointed out. Guardians’ relievers have picked up vital innings and high-leverage outs in critical moments over the course of the season. This type of performance will directly boost postseason odds because playoff games are often decided by the bullpen.

Bettors and analysts studying MLB picks can often tell the difference in a tight moneyline wager, or series bet, because of a quality bullpen. When a group like Cleveland keeps shutting the door, oddsmakers and wise players learn to view tight contests differently. After this performance, postseason odds will increase directly because playoff games are generally decided by the bullpen.

The elephant in the room: Injuries and roster churn

However, bullpen performance is fragile. Cleveland’s relief depth took a hit when Emmanuel Clase, who has been a high-leverage anchor in previous campaigns missed a great deal of time, resulting in role alterations and workload sharing. When we lose a trustworthy closer or setup piece, others get thrown into positions that aren’t comfortable for them, so we’re more likely to have blowups down the stretch in close games. Having depth is almost as important as having star power. You can replace a dominant arm with multiple competent arms but over-usage causes slippage.

Matchups, management and the rotation

It is true that a solid bullpen can disguise rotation weaknesses for a time, but it can’t make up for a subpar starter and a weak offense. When starting pitchers are unable to go six innings every day, the relievers get put into long relief and high leverage too often. They get exhausted and the better matchups get exploited.  In the same way, if the lineup can’t score enough runs, the pitcher’s margin for error shrinks. Cleveland needs a balanced approach in 2025. The bullpen must be kept healthy and well-managed. The rotation must be stabilized, and the offense must be consistent.

How do they change the calculus

The trade deadline and minor-league system help determine whether people can expect a stronger pen to help carry the team.  Cleveland has changed their bullpen by dealing from their surplus or acquiring high-leverage arms in the offseason and deadline. Some analysts graded some of those decisions quite harshly, implying the club valued flexibility over big closer signings. Essentially, the Guardians could get the win with a committee approach if the front office continues managing matchups and usage smartly.

The managerial factor: Usage, analytics and bullpen roles

How the manager and pitching coaches decide to use pitchers is key. Today’s bullpens depend on matchups, fixed roles and strict innings and pitch count limitations. The Cleveland staff has been shown to adjust, including moving relievers into new roles as necessary. However, long-term postseason success requires teams to be clear with roles. Furthermore, teams must protect arms from overuse in August and September to be fresh in October.

Bottom line: Yes, but context matters

If the bullpen becomes better, the Guardians will then have a greater chance of making the postseason and surviving it. Why though? It is because a better bullpen wins those close games and can absorb short starts from the starters. That said, a good bullpen alone does not guarantee playoffs. Sustainable October success for Cleveland will require.

  1. Maintaining bullpen health and depth.
  2. Shoring up the rotation so relievers aren’t overexposed.
  3. Getting enough offensive support to make the pen’s job manageable.
  4. Smart usage from the coaching staff.

When everything falls into place, Cleveland’s bullpen could be the difference maker, but only as part of a bigger team plan.
