Four Moves that Defined the Forgettable Era of Sashi Brown as Browns Executive VP

3. The ‘NBA’ Type Trade that Saw the Browns Acquire Brock Osweiler

It was a trade that had some cheering, some shaking their heads, and some totally confused.

At the end of the day, the March 10th deal that brought the QB to the Browns from the Texans really didn’t do much for this year, and the jury is still out as to what the picks the Browns got in taking on Osweiler will net them.

The deal with Houston saw the Browns take on Osweiler’s $16 million in salary, basically a move that saw them ‘buy’ the Texans 2018 second-round pick and a 2017 sixth-round pick (No. 188 overall).

The Texans got from the Browns a 2017 fourth-round pick (No. 142), and save $10 million in salary-cap space and $16 million in cash in 2017.

It was never really considered that Osweiler would be in the mix to start for the Browns, but with all the issues at the QB spot for Cleveland, Osweiler ended up being the starter in the preseason opener.

He was in the mix to be the starter until DeShone Kizer stepped up, and he was cut by the Browns at the end of training camp, and he ended up going back to Denver, the team he won a Super Bowl with two years ago as Peyton Manning’s backup.

The other thought behind the deal was that the Browns would do enough to be able to trade Osweiler, and have a team take on $8 mil of his salary.

Instead, they had to purge part of their roster of some veteran players, and again had egg on their face when they had to basically eat the $16 mil to watch him play for another team in 2017.
