Big Upset at MAC Women’s Basketball Quarterfinals

MAC quarterfinals

MAC women’s basketball quarterfinal action got underway on Wednesday from Rocket Arena in downtown Cleveland and it lived up to its billing as there was a little bit of everything in these four matchups. There were upsets, close games and not so close games. There was that tough physical play but also that three point shooting by a number of players that make this tournament a lot of fun to watch.

Here’s a look at the quarterfinal results

Miami (OH) 65 Kent State 58

The Redhawks of Miami (OH) jumped in front of the Kent State Golden Flashes early using a 12-0 run late in the first quarter to go up 25-15. They extended the lead by the break. The Golden Flashes were able to close the cap though in the second half but it wasn’t enough to catch the Redhawks. The No. 1 seed Miami (OH) will now take on Ohio (No. 5) in the semifinal game on Friday.

Ohio 89 Central Michigan 88

This game was a high scoring affair as these two teams fought to the very end with the Ohio Bobcats coming away with the win over the Central Michigan Chippewas. Ohio took a good lead at the half but Central Michigan wouldn’t go away as this was a back and forth game to the closing seconds. The Chippewas took a late lead but the Bobcats grabbed the lead back in the last two minutes and prevailed for the victory.

Ball State 75 Bowling Green 63

The reigning champs Ball State Cardinals took the lead early and led by 14 at the break. The Bowling Green Falcons fought back in the second half but it wasn’t enough as the Cardinals kept the Falcons from flying. Ball State will now play Toledo in the other semifinal game on Friday.

Toledo 67 Massachusetts 56

This was the upset of the day as the Toledo Rockets upended the Massachusetts Minutewomen. The Rockets were the No. 6 seed and Massachusetts was the No. 3 seed. After a topsy turvy season for Toledo it was a bit of a surprise that they beat the rising stars of the MAC.. Now Toledo will battle Ball State on Friday in the semifinals, which will be a replay of the MAC championship game from a year ago.
