WWE

2016 AJ Styles defeated Dean Ambrose to win the WWE Heavyweight Championship.

Backlash returned to Pay Per View for the first time since 2009.  It was also the first time that “a” Backlash was not the first Pay Per View to follow a WrestleMania.  In fact, it wasn’t held until September 2016.  A strange twist of date selection for sure.  It was a Smackdown only Pay Per View.

It was a card based on championships changing hands, and being crowned for vacant titles that didn’t currently have champions with the brand split being so new.  Becky Lynch defeated Alexa Bliss, Carmella, Naomi, Natalya, and Nikki Bella in a Six-pack elimination challenge for the inaugural WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship.  Also, Heath Slater and Rhyno defeated The Usos (Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso to capture the inaugural WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship.

2017 Jinder Mahal challenges Randy Orton for the WWE Championship

In the biggest shocker of 2017, and perhaps the last 5 years, Jinder Mahal pulled off a gigantic upset as he defeated Randy Orton to capture the WWE Championship.  Mahal had been a jobber his entire career and no one saw this coming.  In an even bigger shock, Mahal would go on to hold the title for an incredible 7 plus more months.
