A Look Back At The Previous 13 WWE Backlashes

WWE

2006 John Cena (c) defeated Triple H and Edge with Lita to retain the WWE Championship

Following one of the greatest WrestleMania’s ever in WrestleMania 22, this card had it’s work cut out for it but held up ok thanks to the solid main event tussle.  John Cena toppled two extremely tough foes in the midst of a long title reign.

In one of the more zanier moments in WWE history, Mr. McMahon and Shane McMahon defeated Shawn Michaels and “God” This match turned a lot of fans off and sadly is what fans and critics remember about this event.

2007 John Cena (c) defeated Randy Orton, Edge, and Shawn Michaels

A familiar trend was in full force in case you haven’t noticed it yet.  The current champion who wins the main event at WrestleMania, gets to go over in the Backlash main event as well.  This was the fifth straight year they followed this winning format.

In another version of strange ego based booking, it was Mr. McMahon, Shane McMahon and Umaga defeating Bobby Lashley to capture the ECW championship.  Again, a strange choice, complete with Mr. McMahon wearing a “doo rag”.

The best match of the card was clearly the Last Man Standing match for the World Heavyweight Championship between Champion the Undertaker and Challenger Batista.  The match would end in a no contest as both men beat the hell out of each other, and couldn’t answer the bell.
