DETROIT, Mich. – Stefan Kenic hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 3.9 seconds left, but Detroit Mercy’s Corey Allen made a layup just before the buzzer to give the Titans an 85-84 win over the Vikings on Wednesday night at Calihan Hall.
Kenic was one of four players in double figures for the Vikings, finishing with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while adding four rebounds. Tyree Appleby tallied 19 points, four rebounds, a career-high seven assists and two steals, while Bobby Word also scored 19 points.
Jamarcus Hairston recorded 14 points and six rebounds and Kasheem Thomas added eight points and six assists.
The Vikings shot 31-of-56 (.554) from the field and tied the single game school record with 14 three-pointers, finishing 14-of-31 (.400) from behind the arc.
It is the third time this year that CSU has hit 14 threes and the seventh one possession game of the year for the Vikings, including the third in four League contests.
The Titans led by five (81-76) with one minute to play, but Word knocked down a three-pointer and after a Detroit Mercy basket with 24 seconds to play, Appleby made his way to the basket for a quick layup.
Jermaine Jackson, Jr. missed the front end of a one-and-one with 13 seconds to play and the Vikings pushed the ball up the court quickly, finding Kenic at the top of the key who knocked down a three-pointer for the lead.
However, after a timeout, Allen took the inbounds pass and made his way up court and into the lane for the game-winning layup.
The second half featured six ties and three lead changes.
The Titans led 18-17 midway through the first half, but the Vikings scored seven straight points to take a 25-17 lead on Word’s three-pointer with 8:49 to play. Detroit Mercy chipped away at the lead and cut it to two points (31-29) with just over one minute to play, but three-pointers from Appleby and Word were sandwiched around a Titan three-pointer as the Vikings led at halftime, 37-32.
Both teams finished with 28 rebounds, while the Vikings dished out a season-best 19 assists.
Allen led all scorers with 25 points.
CSU concludes its two-game swing through Michigan with a 7:00 pm contest at Oakland on Friday (Jan. 12) night.
