TAMPA, Florida – Glover Teixeira made short work of former UFC Lightweight Champ Rashad Evans tonight with a vicious first round knockout of Evans just 1:48 into the first round.
Despite the action being short in length, it was still packed with action shots early and often until Glover landed a brutal right hand flooring Evans for good. Herb Dean could tell that Evans was not all the way their and stepped in to stop it.
The win is the third straight for Glover Teixeira who is looking to earn a rematch against Jon Bones Jones who will be fighting for the interim Light Heavyweight title next weekend against Ovince Saint Preux. For Evans, the loss is devastating and nearly ends any chance at him getting back into the title picture for a long time.
Elsewhere on the card both women’s matches went the distance as Rose Namajunas beat Tecia Torres by decision in the Womens Straweight division. Also, former number one contender Bethe Correia lost a controversial split decision to Raquel Pennington.
Khabib Nurmagomedov who was originally scheduled for the main event before the injury to Anthony Ferguson was also victorious with a perfectly placed TKO of Darrell Horcher in the second round of their contest.
Cub Swanson who was once one of the hottest prospects in the UFC before dropping two straight, desperately needed a win and got one tonight with a decision win over Hacran Dias.
Perhaps the knockout of the night would go to Bantamweight John Dodson as he only needed 47 seconds to KO Manny Gamburyan on the undercard on UFC Fight Pass.
The next card for the UFC is UFC 197 next Saturday night live from Las Vegas. It will be headlined by a Light Heavyweight Interim title match between the returning Jon Bones Jones and Ovince Saint Preux. It will also feature a co main event as current Flyweight champion Demetrious takes on challenger Henry Cujudo.
