The Five Greatest WWE Summerslams In History

The Greatest Summerslam of all time – 1991

Much like WrestleMania 17, there are certain cards in WWF/WWE lore that will never be topped.  This is one of them.  While the night ended with the match made in Heaven, (Macho Man married Ms. Elizabeth), the rest of the card delivered some of the biggest thrills and memorable moments of many wrestling fans childhoods.

This night featured the coming out party of Bret Hart as a singles star as he defeated Mr. Perfect Curt Henning.  This 18-minute classic is widely regarded as one of the top 3 Summerslam matches of all time.  This was also the last PPV appearance of Andre The Giant as he cornered the Bushwackers in their clash against The Natural Disasters.

This night is memorable too for having the “Faces” win all the big matches.  Case in point was The Big Bossman defeating The Mountie in a Jailhouse match.  Virgil taking the Million Dollar Belt away from the Million Dollar man, and The Legion of Doom defeating The Nasty Boys for the WWF Tag Team Gold.

As for the main event, “The Match Made in Hell”. The name was hokey but the carnage was real as these two teams hooked it up in front of a rowdy MSG crowd.  The Triangle of Terror took on Hulk Hogan & The Ultimate Warrior.

We would come to find out years later that The Ultimate Warrior almost skipped this match after he held up Vince McMahon for more money.  In the end yet another special guest referee, this time Sid Justice would raise Hogan’s hand in victory when all the smoke cleared.  Literally, there was napalm powder that looked like smoke.

The stats from this night are incredible in themselves.  All 3 commentators, all WWE Hall of Famers, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, Gorilla Monsoon, and Rowdy Roddy Piper are no longer alive.  Either is backstage announcer Lord Alfred Hayes.  Those 4 men are just a drop in the bucket of the 13 total Superstars that night who are now gone.  That number includes, Sensational Sherri, Macho Man and Elizabeth.

On a brighter note, the card featured 18 WWE Hall of Famers.  That number alone (18) makes this a no brainer for best ever!
