Stranger things in San Jose, CBJ fall short to Sharks 3-1

It was a rather strange night in San Jose as the Columbus Blue Jackets continued their west coast tour taking on the San Jose Sharks.

During the first half of the game the Jackets looked fast and aggressive, but it was that aggressive play that may have hurt the CBJ down the stretch.

The Sharks took advantage of some Jackets mishaps and made them pay by scoring the first two goals of the game.

One coming at the 12:59 mark of the first period. We wouldn’t see the second goal

until late in the third period. Regardless of the lack of action on the ice, there was some interesting things going on off the ice.

The SAP Center, home of the San Jose Sharks, fell prey to a strange lighting mishap that caused the lights to go out during a stoppage of play in the final minutes of the second period.

The SAP Center audio department took full advantage of this uncommon mishap, by playing some timely Halloween music, complete with the Monster Mash. Fans danced around as if this was all part of some short of Halloween spectacle…as it turns out, it was not.

The lights came back on only a few moments after they went off, but they wouldn’t be up to full power in time, so the officials sent both teams off for the second intermission with just under three minutes to play in the second.

The NHL came out and stated the specific rule that allowed the officials to stop play and continue after a scheduled break.

The weirdness wouldn’t stop there however, midway through the third period, it had appeared that the Sharks had scored a goal, to take a 2-0 lead.  This goal was challenged by the CBJ and overturned.

The score stood 1-0 after the goal reversal. It didn’t mean much however, as the Sharks extended the lead to 2 moments later on a power play goal scored by San Jose center Thomas Hertl.

The CBJ would eventually show some signs of life late in the third period. Scott Hartnell scored a goal at the 17:10 mark to bring the jackets within one.

Hartnell’s goal, was assisted by Brandon Saad and Lukas Sedlak, marking the rookie Sedlak’s first assist in the NHL.

The Sharks would go on to score a goal in the final minute of the third period, bringing an end to any hope of a late comeback for the CBJ.

This moves to Blue Jackets to 2-3-1 on the season through six games, putting the CBJ into 7th place in the Metropolitan division and 14th in the Eastern Conference.

The Jackets will look to finish their West Coast trip strong before coming back to Columbus. The CBJ face off against the Anaheim Ducks Friday night at 10:00 PM ET.
