St. Vincent-St. Mary-Cleveland Central Catholic Game Ends in Brawl Involving Players and Fans

A local high school basketball game ended in a brawl between players and fans.

Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary was beating Cleveland Central Catholic 70-53 with 3:52 remaining, when an Irish player was called for an offensive foul.

A player from Central Catholic retaliated.

A bench-clearing brawl ensued and fans also were involved in the brawl.

A short video clip posted on Twitter shows fans running towards the exits.

NEO Sports Insiders caught up with the eyewitness, Alonte, who filmed the short video, who had this to say:

“SVSM was up 17 points. I’m thinking it’s over so me and my friends leave and a punch was thrown. Then I started leaving, then everyone stormed the court and the player’s mother start to defend her son because it was a unfair advantage. Then I proceeded to pull out my phone got a little bit of live action and was told to put my phone up so it’s only 3 seconds.”

When asked how many people were involved in the brawl, Alonte said he would estimate it was “around 150 people.”

The game was called with 3:52 to play and STVM was declared the winner by a score of 70-53.

We will update this article when punishment is handed down from either the schools or the OHSAA.
