St. Ignatius Rides Four-Run Fourth Inning Over Mayfield, 5-2

The St. Ignatius Wildcats defeated the Mayfield Wildcats 5-2 at Fisher Stadium, home of the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets.

St. Ignatius Pitcher Matthew Geraci started off quickly, Geraci sat down the first three Mayfield batters in order on only eight pitches.

Mayfield saw their first chance to do damage in the second inning with runners on second and third but Geraci got out of the jam.

In the third inning, Mayfield broke the tie.

Bryant Caporale attempted to steal third on a ball that briefly escaped the catcher, after getting the ball he fired the ball to third but it wound up in left field.

Caporale scored to give Mayfield the lead but couldn’t manage to put together a big inning and left a runner on third.

St. Ignatius answered with a big fourth inning.

Jack Eyink and Tom Grosel started the inning off with singles.

The two moved up 90 feet on a passed ball followed by another passed ball that brought home Eyink to tie the game.

Luke Cooper walked and stole second to give the Wildcats runners at second and third.

An RBI groundout from Evan Henry brought home Grosel to give St. Ignatius the lead.

The Wildcats would score two more in the fourth inning with RBI singles from AJ Gaich and Michael McNamara.

In the sixth inning, Mayfield loaded up the bases.

After an RBI walk from Caporale, St. Ignatius made a pitching change.

Matthew Hunt recorded the out on his first pitch, avoiding what could have been a big Mayfield inning.

The story of the game appeared to be St. Ignatius avoiding giving up big innings and limiting the damage.

Matthew Geraci earned the win for St. Ignatius going 3.1 innings giving up 0 earned runs on 1 hit.

St. Ignatius will host North Ridgeville tomorrow at 5:00 pm at Fisher Stadium.

Mayfield will host Kirtland tomorrow and will look to get back to form.
