Softball: Normandy Sweeps Brooklyn in Doubleheader

By Catrina Olsen

Resilient. That is the best word to describe the Normandy girls varsity softball team Friday against Brooklyn in a double header. Winning both games 16-5 and 20-0. After a defeat the day before, Normandy came ready to play.

Normandy’s head coach Matt Bramel attributes the win in the first game to their wanting to avenge previous games and losses.

“Yesterday definitely effected it. We’ve had a couple rough games coming up so more experience out on the field, is definitely more helpful for them (the girls) learning what maybe good things to do and maybe bad things we try to avoid, for sure,” Bramel said.

Having the mentality of teaching the game and helping players learn in the process is what makes a good coach.

Not only did they have good leadership off the field, but on the field number 33, Lizzy Leavelle, was their leader.

Her confidence at the plate and even behind it was apparent. She was constantly talking to the girls on the field and even on base she was chirping encouraging words to her teammates.

Leavelle made a big impact in both games, reaching base three times, hitting a double, and a single.

The second game she was walked three times and hit by a pitch, scoring four times for the invaders.

Normandy returns home for a Great Lakes Conference match against Bay on April 17.

Brooklyn hosts Lutheran West in a Patriot Athletic Conference game on April 17.
