UNCASVILLE, Connecticut – Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut will see the debut of former UFC and WEC champion Benson Henderson this Friday night. Henderson is coming off of a extremely productive 14 fight run in the UFC that saw him capture the Lightweight Title.

In what was easily the biggest defection from the UFC to Bellator, the 32-year-old Henderson recently ended his run with the UFC by signing a multi-fight deal with Bellator MMA.

He won 7 straight fights in the UFC, including two straight over Frankie Edgar which won him the coveted UFC Lightweight title. His reign would eventually end at the ends of longtime rival Anthony Pettis, the same man who ended his reign as WEC champion years prior. Following the title loss, he won 4 of his next six fights. The final wins two coming at Welterweight (155lb) which is where he will make his Bellator debut.

His opponent in his debut with the promotion will be current Bellator Welterweight champion Andrey Koreshkov. Despite not being a household name, Koreshkov is very talented and can give Henderson fits.

He was billed as a sensation in the MMA world early as The MMA news site Bloody Elbow listed Koreshkov as the top welterweight prospect in their 2012 MMA scouting report. Koreshkov faced Douglas Lima for the Bellator Welterweight Championship at Bellator 140 on July 17, 2015 where he won the fight by unanimous decision to become the new Bellator Welterweight Champion.

He is 18-1 with his only loss coming at the hands of the extremely talented Ben Askren at Bellator 97 on July 31, 2013. He hasn’t lost since and anyone who thinks Henderson is just going to walk into Bellator and take the title, may need to think again. This MMA correspondent has this one going to the champ in five rounds by unanimous decision. Time will tell.
