The Matteo’s Browns Beat

BEREA, Ohio – The Browns are in a tight spot in just the third week of the season. Because of injuries to RGIII and his backup Josh McCown, they will have to start third string quarterback Cody Kessler for the next several weeks.

This is far from the original plan of allowing Kessler to have a red shirt season and learn behind both veteran quarterbacks. Kessler, will also be with a lack of talent around him as star receiver Josh Gordon is still suspended for two more weeks. Also, he will be without rookie sensation Corey Coleman who is also banged up with a broken hand.

This is without a doubt, the worst situation that Kessler can come into to begin his NFL career. He has had doubts about his preseason play and many in the national media mocked the fact that the Browns drafted him so high to begin with.

Kessler was drafted in the third round of this past April’s draft out of USC. The pick was critized by most draft experts because of a somewhat disappointing Senior season at PAC 12 powerhouse USC. Kessler’s stock dropped to the point where most draft experts, such as the ESPN’s Todd McShay and the NFL Networks’s Mike Mayock, had him going anywhere from late in the 5th round to being undrafted altogether.

Kessler does have his strong points however, He was a US Army High School All-American out of High School, and then going on to play for one of College Football’s most historic teams, the USC Trojans. He’s dealt with coach after coach (5 in his tenure at USC) and is no stranger to change. Despite all of this, Kessler’s teams were bowl eligible each season he started.

This is the biggest test of his football life, but it could be his best chance to shine as well.
