Kluber to the Big Apple? Report Says Indians and Mets Have Chatted About a Deal for the Ace Pitcher

New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway and Indians two-time Cy Young Award Winner Corey Kluber know each other very well from Callaway’s time as the Tribe pitching coach, and with the Mets looking to make a huge splash this offseason to try and rebuild, it makes sense that the Tribe and New York have had chats about the services of the Indians ace.

Mark Feinsand, Executive Reporter for MLB.com, reports that the Indians and Mets are chatting about Kluber, and that the team had already had previous discussions about New York getting catcher Yan Gomes, who ended up going to the Nationals in a deal for a pair of prospects on Friday evening.

Here’s the tweet from Feinsand Saturday evening:

Sources say the Mets have spoken with the Indians about Corey Kluber. The two teams had talked about Yan Gomes before he was dealt to the Nationals, but the Mets’ interest now appears to also extend to Kluber, who had Mets manager Mickey Callaway as a pitching coach in Cleveland

It sounds more and more like if there’s an Indians pitcher that will be on the move this offseason, it will be Kluber, as the team is talking to Carlos Carrasco about an extension, and moving Trevor Bauer just doens’t make any fiscal sense despite the fact he will get another healthy raise this offseason through arbitration.

The Mets already have been busy this offseason, as they are set to announce a deal with the Mariners to send their 3rd and 4th biggest prospects out west for Mariners for Edwin Diaz and Robinson Cano.

One prospect to keep an eye on if the talks between the Tribe and Mets continue is outfielder Brandon Nimmo, 6-foot-3, 207 pounds, and a player who last season hit .263 with 17 homers and 47 RBI with nine steals.

He was the first round pick of Mets in the the 2011 Major League Baseball draft, and with the Tribe needing outfielders, adding a player like Nimmo would be a perfect fit.

Andres Gimenez, David Peterson, Anthony Kay, and Ronny Mauricio are other Mets prospects that the Indians likely would be interested in talking about if they were to deal Kluber.
