Lyndhurst, OHIO- An Early statement from the Kenston defense propelled the Bombers to defeat the Arcs 51-28 Friday night.
The first two possessions for the Arcs ended up in turnovers. The Bomber defense forced two fumbles within the first three minutes of the game and the offense did their part to capitalize. With just over seven minutes left to play in the first quarter, Kenston found themselves up 14-0.
Kenston would end up forcing four turnovers during the win Friday night, but forcing two early turnovers in the first quarter that led to a two-touchdown lead was the spark the Bombers needed to start the game.
“It was a big deal for us,” coach Jeff Grubich said. “It’s something we emphasize every week, takeaways and turnovers. If you win that battle, you win football games.”
The Kenston offense was led by quarterback Jon Tomcufcik. The junior signal caller sparked the offense by scoring a total of four touchdowns, two rushing and two passing. Near the goal line is where Tomcufcik did a lot of damage to the Arcs Friday night.
Making the right quarterback reads under center and reading the defense is how he found himself rushing for two scores near the goal line. Tomcufcik showed off his rocket arm during the win as well, connecting on multiple deep balls with various receivers. Most notably, he found fellow junior Tyler Mintz from 61-yards out to give the Bombers a 22-0 lead in the first quarter.
He was consistently making plays throughout the night for Kenston and coaches have really taken notice the hard work he puts in to lead this team to a 5-0 start to the season.
“He’s done a great job,” coach Grubich said. “He’s grown a lot since his sophomore year and he’s got a good command of the offense. Those coaches are doing a great job getting him better every week. He puts the work in and hard work pays off.”
The first three scores of the game belonged to Kenston. A successful 2-point conversion on the third touchdown gave Kenston a 22-0 lead in the closing minutes of the first quarter. Brush would add in their first score of the game in the final minute of the quarter to give the Bombers a 22-7 lead after 12 minutes of action.
Kenston would then take a 29-7 lead at halftime, but the largest lead the Bombers took all night came with 18 seconds left in the third quarter. A 44-14 lead would ensue following a 7-yard touchdown run by Jay Middleton.
Brush quarterback Anthony Shorts connected with Kris Cecil twice in the fourth quarter to eventually get Brush within 16 points, but a last-second touchdown run from junior Jack Porter would eventually seal the win for Kenston, sending them home with a 51-28 victory over the Arcs.
The win against Brush lifts Kenston to 2-0 in the conference and 5-0 overall while the loss for the Arcs drops them to 0-2 in the conference and 2-3 overall.
Player of the Game: Jon Tomcufcik, QB, Kenston
The junior quarterback was lights out Friday night during the win. The threat on the ground along with his proficient passing game is what sparked the Bomber offense against the Arcs. Tomcufcik and the Bombers are now 5-0 and are set to take on Mayfield next week as they look to stay undefeated in the conference.
