A couple offseason acquisitions led the way for the Indians on Tuesday, as the team won their first spring training game of 2019, topping the Colorado Rockies 5-3 at Salt River Fields.
Right fielder Daniel Johnson, who was picked up in the deal that sent catcher Yan Gomes to the Nationals, collected his first multi-hit effort of the spring campaign, going 2-for-3 with an RBI-triple in the second inning and a solo home run in the seventh.
Old friend Carlos Santana provided the Tribe’s other long-ball on the day, hitting a 2-run homer in the sixth inning.
Another Indian who fans would love to see have a big 2019 is center fielder Leonys Martin, and Tuesday he put up his first two hits of the spring, contributing two singles and a run scored.
Overall the Indians offense had a solid day, as five of their eight hits went for extra bases (2 HR, 1 3B, 2 2B).
Eight pitchers took the mound for the Indians on Tuesday, with lefty Sam Hentges collecting the win for the Tribe, starting the day with a scoreless first inning.
Right-handers Dan Otero and Adam Cimber followed with scoreless innings, as the first three Indians pitchers faced the minimum (3 BF).
Non-roster invitee Henry Martinez (1.0IP, 1BB, 1SO, 3BF) and Minor Leaguer lefty Sean Brady (2.0IP, 2SO, 6BF) also had scoreless outings.
Now at 1-2-1 on the spring, the Indians are back on Wednesday as they will havve a split squad, sending A team to Maryvale to face the Milwaukee Brewers (1:05 MT/3:05 PM ET) while hosting the Seattle Mariners in Goodyear at 1:05 MT/3:05 PM ET).
Shane Bieber will make his first start of the spring at Milwaukee against righty Jholys Chacin, and Adam Plutko will take the bump for his second spring start at home against righty Mike Leake.
