John Farrell a Perfect Fit for the Indians to Take Callaway’s Place as Pitching Coach

The Cleveland Indians knew that once the 2017 season came to an end their coaching staff might never be the same again, and those premonitions became a reality on Sunday.

The staff will see the departure of pitching coach Mikey Callaway, as reports say the only pitching coach the team has seen under Terry Francona is taking the head job as the new manager of the New York Mets.

The Mets, who were 70-92 this last season, were managed in 2017 by Terry Collins, who stepped down after a tough season.

Callaway has led the Indians pitching staff to being one of the best in baseball, and there’s no doubt he will be tough to replace.

Or will he?

Yes, there’s plenty of coaches out there who would salivate at the thought of being in charge of pitchers like Corey Kluber, Carlos Carrasco and Trevor Bauer, but there’s also one name that makes perfect sense to come to be the guy to take the spot of Callaway on the staff.

John Farrell.

The former Indians pitcher will not be back in Boston in 2018, sent packing much like Francona was six years ago. He and Francona are like brothers off the field, and adding him to a staff sounds like a perfect fit.

Francona coached under Francona before, as he was his pitching coach in Boston from 2006 to 2010, and then went on to manage in Toronto in 2011.

There’s already a feeling out there of how much of a fit it would be for Farrell to join Francona’s staff, and it might just take some of the sting out of losing the popular Callaway.

Now it comes down to Francona making the call to his good friend and talking him into it. Something that doesn’t seem all that far fetched.

Let’s see how it plays out, but it makes all the sense in the world for Farrell to be back in an Indians uniform in 2018.
