Holy Name Defeats Parma, 10-0; Green Wave Takes On Strongsville In Third Round Of Brooklyn District Tournament

By: Jaret Andrews

BROOKLYN, Ohio- The third game on Sunday saw a battle for the city of Parma. The Holy Name Green Wave met the Parma Redmen at the John M. Coyne Recreation Center in Brooklyn, Ohio. The Green Wave went 17-12-4 in the regular season and destroyed Garfield Heights in the opening round of the tournament last Wednesday. Their opponent, the Redmen, went 7-19 in regular season play, and most recently got blown out by Strongsville by a final score of 6-0. Holy Name opened as a strong favorite. The winner of this game will meet the winner of the 7:30 game between Strongsville and Lakewood.

The first period started nightmarishly for the Redmen. A goal just 7 seconds into the game scored by Sonny Dalton and the Green Wave weren’t don’t there. They netted two more goals before we reached 12 minutes to play. Chris Callahan and Sebastiano Layne scored those two goals for the Namers. The Redmen defense held well for the next 10 minutes. While losing the time of possession battle, they managed to turn away shot after shot of the Green Wave attack. They could only hold for so long, however, as Chris Callahan scored his second of the game at the 13:35 mark of the first period. The Redmen went into the locker room looking to make serious adjustments being outshot 27-2 and outscored 4-0.

In what may be the most casual period of hockey I’ve ever seen, the Green Wave were able to continue their dominance. Parma held Holy Name scoreless for the first half of the period, but the Namers couldn’t be held down forever. They scored three goals in the frame (Milo Henry, Tyler Guarniere, and Sam Hauck). It was hard to tell the difference between a save and a goal due to the lack of energy in the arena. The crowd didn’t erupt and the players didn’t celebrate. Seemed to look like a business meeting for The Green Wave as they went into the third period with a 7-0 lead, and with over a six-goal advantage, a running clock.

The third period of action flew by thanks to the running clock. Holy Name continued their onslaught netting three more goals in the period. Joey Martin got the scoring started for the Green Wave. His goal was followed up by Chris Callahan completing his hat-trick. The tenth unanswered goal for Holy Name was scored by Sonny Dalton, his second of the game. That goal ended the game due to the ten goal mercy rule with 1:33 to go. The Green Wave will move on to face Strongsville.
