Endless Cannon Fire in Columbus; Jackets dominate Canadiens 10-0

If you were sitting in attendance at Nationwide arena for the Blue Jackets-Canadiens game on Friday night, then you more than likely have acute hearing loss.

The CBJ goal cannon was going off so often that you may have confused the game for a Civil War battle.

This was no malfunction, just the tune of the CBJ destroying their competition, The Montreal Canadiens, 10-0.

Yes you read that last line correctly. The Jackets really scored ten goals against the (until Friday night) undefeated in regulation Canadiens. They were also the only team still undefeated in regulation.

It was a free for all Friday night as the CBJ set the team single game record for goals in a game (10). The previous record was 8.

Besides setting the record for most goals in a single game Friday night, the CBJ also flirted with a few others, including tying the 2nd most power play goals in team history (4) and tying the most goals in a single period (5).

Cam Atkinson, Scott Hartnell, Nick Foligno and Josh Anderson all scored 2 goals. As if that wasn’t enough, Seth Jones and David Savard also scored one each.

I would usually tell you when a goal was scored, by who and who assisted. Tonight however,  just know the goals were scored by everyone, the whole game and assisted by everyone else.

Beyond the scoring, just about everyone had an assist, or 2 or 3 or 4. Alexander Wennberg lead the way with 4 assists, Zach Werenski and William Karlsson each with 2, and Dubinsky, Foligno, Johnson, Gagner, Calvert, Jenner, Saad, Jones, Anderson, and Nutivaara all with 1. (Deep Breath)…yeah, that’s just about the entire CBJ squad.

I’m genuinely surprised Tortorella or Stinger didn’t end up on the assist list Friday night.

If scoring an absurd amount of goals didn’t impress you, than the spectacular defense on top of the absurd amount of goals should. The defensive lines played confident and explosive, protecting the goal better than ever, and don’t look now, but Sergei Bobrovsky is playing some really…really…really good hockey.

With 30 saves Friday night, Bob posted his third shut out of the season and second in the past two games.

Talk about a team effort.

After the game, many players on the team talked about how they had never a part of something like that before and just how special it was. Captain Nick Foligno later said “I don’t think I’ve ever been part of something like this in my career. It’s amazing, but I’m not going to get too excited, things like this could go either way. Luckily for us, things went our way.”

Before tonight, Montreal had goal differential of plus 20. The Jackets cut that in half in a single game. Take a moment to let that sit in.

I had recently been talking about how the CBJ’s stock was on the rise…well if it wasn’t before, then it certainly is now.

The Blue Jackets early season success has come as a bit of a surprise. Most predicted that it would take a good amount of time for the young guys to get in tune with the speed and physicality of professional hockey.

This transition appears to happening in front of our eyes.

If the CBJ can continue to put it together and play with the intensity that they played with Friday night, then the near future is looking very promising in Columbus.

The Blue Jackets moved to 5-3-1 on the season with this win against Montreal.

The Jackets look to continue their conquest Saturday night on a one game road trip to ST. Louis  to take on the Blues.
