BRUNSWICK, OHIO- Brunswick came in feeling great after last week’s 24-14 win over Austintown Fitch in front of a huge home crowd that evened their record at 1-1 and gave new head coach Mark Pinzone his first win as head coach of the Blue Devils. However the Blue Devils came into tonight’s game without injured starting Quarterback Josh Stacho (Collarbone) and starting Tight End Zak Zagrafos (Foot). The Shaker Heights Red Raiders came into tonight’s game against Brunswick looking to win their third straight game after winning their first two by a combined score of 82-12. In the end, it was Brunswick holding off Shaker Heights 28-26.

After receiving the opening kick, the Blue Devils marched down the field on 6 rushes by Starting Quarterback Cole Zamiska for 48 yards and took a 7-0 lead on a 27 yard TD run by Kaden Harter.

After a three and out drive by Shaker, Brunswick once again showed they can run the ball well as they went 65 yards on 8 plays, culminating with a 3 yard TD run by Zamiska to ahead 14-0. Harter and Sam Raiff  contributed with runs of 17 and 20 yards respectively.

Micah Hills put Shaker on the board early in the second with a 3 yard TD run to make the score 14-6 after Brunswick blocked the extra point attempt.

After both teams exchanged turnovers, both defenses held the opposition to drives that netted negative yards, but with just over a minute left in the half, Shaker’s Jamir Dismukes threw a 56 yard touchdown bomb to Micah Hills to tie the game at 14 after a two point conversion.

Right before the half, it seemed like Brunswick would have a chance at the lead after Ethan Flanigan took off for a 54 yard run to take the Blue Devils within the Raiders’ 5 yard line but it was called back on an illegal formation call. Brunswick ran out the clock after that and both teams went into the locker room tied at 14.

Shaker took the second half kickoff and would have taken a 21-14 lead on a long pass but it was deflected away at the very last second by Flanigan, forcing Shaker to punt.

The first Brunswick possession was the Ethan Flanigan show as he gained 69 of the 70 yards Brunswick gained, including a 14 yard TD run straight up the middle, breaking tackle after tackle, giving Brunswick a 21-14 lead.

After a quick possession for Shaker, Brunswick’s Flanigan once again showed he could not be stopped and ran in for a 7 yard touchdown to put Brunswick up 28-14.

On the ensuing kickoff, Shaker’s Hills ran the kick back for a 99 yard touchdown, making the score 28-20 after the extra point attempt was blocked for the second time. On their next series, Shaker’s Dismukes seemed to have a 80 yard run, but it was called back on a holding penalty.

A Brunswick penalty gave Shaker new life after Shaker had a 3rd and 25 deep in their own end. The drive ended with a Dismukes 24 yard TD pass to Hills to make it 28-26 Brunswick after the two point conversion failed.

On Brunswick’s next drive, quarterback Cole Zamiska threw an interception to Shaker’s Hills, giving them the ball at their own 35 with just under 6 minutes to play in the game.

A penalty made it 2nd and 32 for Shaker, but Dismukes hit Hills for 17 making it 3rd and 15, but a holding penalty killed the drive, forcing Shaker to punt with 4:37 left.

With 4:32 left in the game, Brunswick ran the ball to kill clock but the drive was stopped after a Zamiska incomplete pass on third down.

Down two points with 2:54 left, Shaker started on their own 30 after the punt, but the Raiders could not gain a first down after two timely Brunswick sacks, giving the ball back to Brunswick with 1:35 left and up by two.

Brunswick kneeled on the ball to wind down the remaining time, giving the Blue Devils a hard fought 28-26 victory.
