Browns to host veteran linebacker NaVorro Bowman

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns are looking to potentially bolster their linebacker corps after yielding 246 rushing yards in Sunday’s 38-14 loss to the Chargers.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that former 49ers and Raiders linebacker NaVorro Bowman will workout for the Browns on Tuesday.

Once considered one of the NFL’s best linebackers, Bowman is currently a free agent after new Raiders head coach Jon Gruden decided against re-signing the thirty-year-old during the offseason. Bowman originally joined the Raiders in mid-October last year after being released by San Francisco following an 0-5 start to the season.

In 10 games with Oakland, the 30-year-old registered 89 combined tackles, 1.5 sacks an interception and a fumble recovery. Over the course of 15 games between the two teams, Bowman finished with a 127 combined tackles in what was a Renaissance season missing the majority of the 2016 season with an Achilles injury.

Prior to signing with Oakland last fall, the Penn State product has spent the first six years of his career with the 49ers. During that time he was selected to three Pro Bowls and named a First-Team All-Pro four times. Bowman was also part of the 49ers 2012 team that advanced all the way to Super Bowl XLVII but lost to the Ravens.

It goes without saying that Bowman’s best days are behind him, but his bounce-back 2017 season showed there’s still some gas left in the tank. The presence of a veteran with Bowman’s pedigree could not only help bolster the Browns defensive play but also serve as a valuable voice in a young locker room.
