Bay Village Boys Win Cross Country Great Lakes Conference Championship

Avenging their 2017 and only loss in GLC history, this years edition of the Bay High school Men’s Cross Country team posted a record best score of 17 points, with 6 of the 7 GLC first team honorees wearing Bay Rocket uniforms. Ivan Slyepkan continued to pick up championship titles in 2018 with his win in the cold, wet and very sloppy conditions in the 9:30am event.

Pacing his teammates through the slow drizzle, Ivan controlled the race and pulled away to the victory in the last half mile. Khaled Hamil’s impressive effort earned him the runner up position, only 4 seconds back, while Jude Ault’s stirring finish past 4:24 1600m runner Jack McDonough, put him another 4 seconds back in third place.

Will Warren also stayed very close to the front with a fifth place run, to earn his first all conference award. Sixth place Trevor Ifft and seventh place Everest McKenna finished about as close together as possible, as only .3 seconds separated them, as both earned GLC first team awards. Sam Diamond’s tenth place finish topped off the Rockets dominating morning, earning him a GLC second team honor.

By the time the GlC Open race came to be run at 10:50am, the grounds had turned into a very slow muddy quagmire. The steady ran that fell did not deter Sam Young, as he shot out to the lead, passing the first 800 meters 7 seconds faster than the varsity race had.

After some back and forth with teammates Alex Semancik, Sam Warren, and Jacob Feicks, Mr. Young took the lead for good during the second lap in the woods, pulling away for an impressive win. Sam’s winning time of 17:49 would have earned him a GLC First Team Award and 6th place in the varsity race.

The Rockets team performance was almost indescribable for this race, with the first 16 places going to Bay, which was a fitting end for the 2018 open runners season, in which they won multiple Varsity Invitational titles.
