Free Agents the Browns Should Pursue During 2016 NFL Free Agency

Ronnie Hillman

5.) Ben Jones C Houston Texans
If Alex Mack decides to opt out and not resign with the Browns, then they have a real quandary on their hands. Do they trust first round pick Cameron Erving at center which seems to be his best fit or not. In his rookie season Erving struggled mightily. He was benched several times throughout the season, even on special teams. If they don’t trust him Jones can be a serious possibility. He played really well this season after being moved to center but he does have the versatility to play guard. He would likely start at center or right guard if the Browns go after him.

6.) Ronnie Hillman RB Denver Broncos
Like Lamar Miller, Hillman hasn’t taken a lot of wear and tear in the NFL averaging just 11 touches a game over his four year career. At 24, he still provides a young player the Browns can be interested in to improve the running game. Unlike CJ Anderson, he is an unrestricted free agent so the Browns wouldn’t have to give up anything to sign him. He also has the ability to both run and catch passes unlike Crowell.

7.) Jaye Howard DE Kansas City Chiefs
The Browns need to improve their front seven after being towards the bottom of the NFL in rushing and sacks again. Howard can be one of those guys that makes it into free agency. The Chiefs defense was among the NFLs best but includes other free agents including Derrick Johnson, Eric Berry, and Tamba Hali among others. If Howard makes it the Browns should pounce. He had a breakout year this season for Kansas City and at 27 is great against the run and provides a pass rush with 5.5 sacks this season from 3-4 DE. He is an underrated name but highly regarded among experts.
